Tidal 14: City of Devonport Art Award

Today I was notified that my image, Halcyon, has been selected as a finalist in Tidal:14, the City of Devonport Art Award. The Tidal:14 exhibition will be officially opened at the Devonport Regional Gallery on Friday 12 December 2014 at 7:30pm followed by the announcement of the award recipients.

Halcyon, 2012, analogue pinhole photograph, 50x187cm

The Halcyon is a mythical bird, said by ancient writers to breed in a nest floating at sea at the winter solstice, where fair winds charm the waves into calm. The serene, light of dawn and the sibylline landform of a distant island, evoke the mists of time and the great bird floating on its nest.

An analogue, pinhole camera and photographic film were used to capture this image at low tide on the Tasmanian, winter solstice. An experimental method of overlapping frames and multiple exposure, in camera was used. Digital processes were confined to scanning of the colour negative and printing of the image.
